SolidWorks Modeling & Ansys CFD

This was a summer project I worked on early on in my engineering journey. Looking back, some of the work here done was a bit crude, but it just goes to show how far I've come!

SolidWorks modeling

At the time, I my favourite car was a Toyota Chaser. I decided I would model the car using SolidWorks, and then use the model in Ansys Fluent to do some basic CFD.I found basic dimensions online, and tried my best to model the vehicle to scale accurately.

After lots of work, this was the final result! Looking at this project now, it would have been better to model something like this using NX or CATIA.

Ansys Fluent

At the time, I had no idea what I was doing, and how to use CFD properly. I can see now that the meshing was way too coarse, domain wasn't sized properly, boundary conditions are wrong, and I didn't monitor convergence either. With that being said, I had fun, and this project helped me transition well to Formula SAE.

Here are some of my results. While definitely inaccurate, it was reassuring to see things like flow separation at the rear, and high pressure region at the front of the car. I'd like to try this again in 3D with a moving ground boundary, larger domain, and higher quality mesh. It would be interesting to see the difference!
